The Dome of Light

I love public transport, and I particularly like trains. When you are travelling, it’s a wonderful way of seeing a slice of real  life, without being insulated by car or bus windows. So on my recent visit to Taiwan, I was happy to take the metro and the long distance rail network.

Getting around Taipei is really easy on the MRT. Buy an “Easy Card” to get around without having to worry about buying tickets every time you want to travel.

One thing you must not miss – if you like metro stations with a difference – is the amazing interior of the Formosa Boulevard Station in Kaohsiung City. We went there to catch the MRT to Qiaotou to visit the Ten Drum  Creative Park.

With its jaw-dropping “Dome of Light”, the station claims to be among the 10 most beautiful train stations in the world.  Reputed to be the largest glass work in the world, the Dome of Light was designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata.  It is 30 metres in diameter, and is made up of 4500 glass panels.

The Dome of Light took nearly four years to complete. It depicts the story of human life in four chronologically arranged themes: Water: The Womb of Life; Earth: Prosperity and Growth; Light: The Creative Spirit; and Fire: Destruction and Rebirth. The overall message is of love and tolerance.  It’s really worth the trip on the metro just to see this!

Xizi Bay

Xizi Bay is perched on the sea at the western edge of Kaohsiung City, just southwest of Mt. Longevity, with the Qijin Peninsuna stretching southward. Its main feature is a swimming beach known for its clear blue water, the beauty of its sunsets, and its natural reef. The atmosphere and the scenery here change from morning to night; each time of the day has its special attraction, but the brilliant colors of the sunset are unparalleled in their beauty. The long breakwater here is the landmark of Xizi Bay, and basking in the sea breeze on the breakwater gives the most pleasant and comfortable sensation imaginable.

The vessels both large and small scattered like stars on the surface of the sea are entertained by the intermittent sound of foghorns; and as the day darkens and the air of romance deepens, pairs of lovers stroll along the breakwater listening to the waves and watching the lights of fishing boats on the sea. From the parking lot at the entrance to the bay you can also get a good view of Kaohsiung Harbor. National Sun Yat-sen University is situated within the Xizi Bay Scenic Area, adding a bit more of a cultural flavor; here you will also find, in addition to the swimming beach, a salt-water aquarium, Seaside Park, and National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall. The swimming beach has fine, soft sand and a grove of stately coconut palms, filling the area with the flavor of the South Seas. In the summer this is a perfect place for enjoying the water, playing beach volleyball, and sunbathing, and in peak seasons the crowds are dense and the activities intense. Lounging under a palm tree and basking in the soft cool breeze as the sun goes down is an experience that lifts you out of the mundane world.

Former British Consulate

The consulate was built in 1865 with more than a hundred years of history. It is now the most antique western building preserved in Taiwan. It was the western building designed by a British engineer and built by Chinese craftsmen, and it is the most meaningful ancient building of Chinese modern history with graceful and elegant proportion. Semicircle arches are rhythmically arranged in order with considerably rhyming. At the corner, the circle arch is smaller and the wall pillar is bigger, which has reinforced function in dynamics. It is the Baroque typed building of the Renaissance era. It emphasizes on the stylish regular pattern and its hollow pattern railings were built with excellent bricks. Harmonious sense of beauty is shown at every turn. Among the existing western style buildings in Taiwan, it provides an excellent example of technique and style and that possesses the value of historical architecture study and conservation value. The building brick and mortar used all continue using the traditional method of Fukien and Taiwan. Some parts are even filled with clay and soil, while wooden truss is built with complete western style. It is the building that has double function, administrative and residential function, and its style also lies in between them. It is the portrayal illustration of modern Chinese and Western cultural communication, and also the first formal consulate built by foreigners in Taiwan. The occurrence of consulate opened up the development of western architecture for Taiwan in the future

At Pier-2, Collision is a Driving Force

It was once an abandoned and forgotten warehouse buried in history due to the move from an industrial based segment to the service sector. However, with a group of persistent artist who injected waves of creativity and inspiration into the area, the Pier-2 area was released and re-born making the region a place where tourist and locals can come together to enjoy fine art. With the collision of an old area and new fine art, Pier-2 becomes an area of new vitality and liveliness.

Located at the sides of the pier are the artistic warehouse clusters. Not only are there unlimited flows of cars, boats, sea breeze and people coming and going every day but also when looking at the vast ocean and sky, one is relaxed, stress-free with limitless thoughts. The encounter of the land and the ocean is so vast at Pier-2, it seems to symbolized the bright future ahead.

The Operation Center and the artists who have come to showcase their significant artworks both have their own dreams and visions for Pier-2. However both are willing to put down their differences to support one another and work towards a common goal which is the success of Pier-2. Despite the administrative and artistic conflict, both parties come together to become intimate partners, building an memorable and lasting image in the hearts of the people.

Great cooperation needs time and hardship to accumulate.

On Taiwan’s Independence Day, October 10th, 2000, celebration fireworks were not only launched in Taipei. For the first time the government also decided to release fireworks in southern Taiwan, and Kaohsiung became the selected location. In order to find a suitable location to present fireworks, the organizers re-discovered the Pier-2 Warehouses just beside the harbor. Later in 2001, a group of passionate Taiwanese artists established the Pier-2 Artistic Development Association. Pier-2 has become the headquarters for artistic development in southern Taiwan.

The Kaohsiung City Bureau of Cultural Affairs took over the Pier-2 Art Center in 2006, starting a series of exhibitions and festivals such as the Kaohsiung Design Festival, the Chinese Character Exhibition, Kaohsiung International Steel & Iron Sculpture Festival, Kaohsiung International Container Art Festival, “Here comes the Kaohsiungers”, Mega Port Festival, The Wall Moon Theatre, Kaohsiung Youth Innovative Design Exhibition, Intertidal Region, Point & Wavy Ribbon Formation Performance Season etc. Every performance and exhibition filled the city with creative vibes injecting new life to the Pier-2 Art Center. In doing so, the center has continuously been presenting avant-garde perceptions and appearances, while building this port city into an attractive cultural and living hub.

TWR Entertainment, Inc. has found their home in Warehouse Number 9.TWR Entertainment, Inc. is a globally-focused, Asia-based media organization that successfully blends world class creativity and groundbreaking technology innovation. Pier-2 has now become on par with the rest of the artistic world where imagination, creativity, and animation has become solid building blocks for the future.

Kaohsiung's light rail system will be fully operational and linked to both the Red and Orange lines of the Kaohsiung MRT. The new system will significantly enhance the city's mass-transit system and create a more complete urban transportation network. With 35 stations and six transfer stations, the light rail system's two lines (Ring Line and Waterfront Line) will total 22.1km in length. Construction work is to start in October 2012, with the Waterfront Line scheduled to start running in December 2014. The light rail system will improve the quality of transportation in Kaohsiung, create a barrier-free environment, and hopefully encourage the city's 2.2 million motorcyclists to embrace a low-carbon form of transportation.

Port of Kaohsiung is the 12th busiest container port in the world. Consequently, Kaohsiung City Government has been actively shaping the port zone to become Asia's New Bay Area. Starting in 2013, the government will initiate a series of building projects in the port area, along piers 15 to 21 and nearby. Projects include the Kaohsiung Exhibition and Convention
Center, which will host major international exhibitions, the Port and Cruise Service Center, which will serve travelers, the Kaohsiung Maritime Culture and Popular Music Center, where musical and cultural performances will be held, and Kaohsiung Main Public Library, a superb example of eco-friendly architecture.

Shinkuchan Commercial District

Innovative management and independent shops find a home at Kaohsiung's Shinkuchan Commercial District.

Learning from the past success of the "Old Kuchan" shopping area, the Shinkuchan Commercial District is centered on a popular consumer magnet—the Datong Department Store at the intersection of Wufu 2nd Road and Renzhi Street. It is also right next to the Mercuries Department Store and the Oscar Cinema on Lane 167 of Wenheng 2nd Road. New Juejiang has also learned a lesson from its predecessor's downfall, replacing the latter's traditional business style with a new management approach.

Young people, new fashion, recreation, shopping and dining all collide at New Juejiang, which is rapidly sucking in new businesses to become Kaohsiung's biggest shopping destination. Cinemas, trendy clothes, jewelry, watches, cosmetics, and beauty salons mingle with cafes, American and Japanese fast food restaurants, and all types of stalls to provide a something for everyone. Shinkuchan is the place to go in southern Taiwan for imported goods and chic attire, much of it arriving in step with debuts in the fashion capitals of the world.

Love River

Almost all big cities have a beautiful river passed by, this is especially true in Kaohsiung. Love River lies across Kaohsiung for times of sunrises and sunsets. Love River, known as Dagou River in Qing Dynasty, was renamed by Japanese as Takao River.

The river was also called Kaohsiung Canal. The riverbanks were beautified with greenery works and developed to be park areas, decorated with pillars chained with iron rope. The area becomes a romantic place for lovers to date with, therefore, the river was reputed as Love River.

On the banks, a number of parks and green lands were developed and constructed with a very long bicycle way. You may wander relaxedly on the pathways of the banks, admiring the pleasant landscape and enjoying the gentle touch of breeze.

At night, lights sparkle on Love River. Visitors can take the boats on the east and west coast to look at the romantic and charming sights of Love River. Then, you might like to enjoy drinking coffee at cafes of different moods, such as cafe literary and art squares over River Mambo and olden Love River. It is nice to enjoy the aromatic coffee and listen to the music with different moods and tempos, allowing the leisure of the harbor city to relax your body and soul.

Lotus Lake
This famous scenic area on the northern outskirts of Kaohsiung City is noted for its profusion of temples, with the Confucius Temple at its northern edge and, in the south, the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas and the Spring and Autumn Pavilions. The lake is most beautiful in the late afternoon, when the setting sun is reflected in the water. Nearby are the ruins of the Fengshan County walls and gates, which have been designated a first-grade historic.

Spring and Autumn Pavilions
Two massive pavilions dedicated to Kuan Kung, the God of War, the Spring and Autumn Pavilions were completed in 1951. In front of the pavilions is a statue of Guanyin(Kuanyin), the Goddess of Mercy, riding a dragon. According to legend, Guanyin(Kuanyin) appeared above the clouds riding on a dragon, signifying that believers must erect an image depicting this event between pavilions of summer and autumn: The present-day structures are a result of this vision.

Dragon and Tiger Pagodas
About 700 meters to the south of the Spring and Autumn Pavilions are the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. The dragon's throat is the entrance and the lion's mouth is the exit. Entering a dragon's throat and coming out a lion's mouth symbolizes turning bad luck to good fortune. Inside, paintings depict China's 24 most obedient sons as well as scenes of heaven and hell to inspire people to do good deeds during their lifetime, and to provide threatening examples of retribution for wrongdoing.

Chengqing Lake

Chengqing Lake is located in Kaohsiung City's Niaosong District. It is the largest lake in the Kaohsiung area, developed originally as a reservoir to meet the need for water for industrial use. Later on the lake was improved through environmental landscaping, until today it offers the beauty of a forested park. It was opened to the public as a tourist destination in 1960.

The surface of the lake has a water area of more than 300 hectares, and the highway that has been built around it stretches for a total of seven kilometers.
The tranquil beauty of the area has led it to be given the sobriquet, "West Lake of Taiwan." The best known of the lake's attractions is probably its Bridge of Nine Turns, which was built in 1960; it is 230 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, and does indeed have nine turns.

Under the hill is an aquarium that was originally built in 1961 as an anti-nuclear underground bunker. Its winding, 200-meter length was later remodeled into a tourist aquarium with exhibits of all sorts of oceanic organisms divided into eight display areas: special animals, treasures of the sea, shellfish, coral, strange rocks, and sperm whales. It is a place that is perfect for both entertainment and education.

Shiba Luohan Mountain (Luohanshan) (Eighteen Arhats Mountain) lies next to Laonong River, Kaohsiung. Shiba Luohan Mountain (Luohanshan) consists of more than 40 mountains. Years of erosion have resulted in its rough geography. Legend says that the eighteen arhats will safeguard local people and their wealth, but the people will be punished if they spend the money elsewhere.

Shiba Luohan Mountain (Luohanshan )has very special geography and geology. The best positions to appreciate the mountains are the outlook point on Linpan track and the other one next to the 185 Highway. With Laonong River running by, the mountains present spectacular scenery. There are macaques in the mountains as well.

Tianliao Moon World

Tianliao Moon World is a tract of barren land between Chongde Village and Gutin Village of Tianliao District. It has a dreary and desolate beauty of desert and is famous for its similarity to the landscape of the Moon surface.

This queer terrain is called "badlands" in geography an adverse landscape caused by the strong erosion of rain and streams over the years due to "rejuvenation" of the earth's crust. The Tianliao Moon World sits in the valley of a small tributary of Erren River and used to have a dam for sediment storage to store water in the rain season. The sight of it was called "yue-jing-nong-tang" (Farm Pond on the Moon). However, the dam (farm pond) has been washed away over approximately a decade of time with the continuous scour of rain. Today, nothing but total desolation is what is left there.

Apart from the eye-catching Chinese-style "Lan-Yue-Lou" (Moon Take Multistory Building) standing in the proximity of the Moon World for visitors to rest and appreciate the sight, there are also Rihyue Temple, Fongyue Temple, Nihuo Spring (fire on mud spring), peculiar scenery, and a camping area for visitors to go.
